Hologram facade with City Storehouse
Renovation / New building construction, Markt 16, Jena, Germany
The valuable late-medieval monument on the Jena market square features O'Brien's design with a hologram façade and a new roof, integrated into the remainder of the existing market square ensemble. After years of neglect, the historic post-supported storey constructed building was revitalised via gradual implementation of the City Storehouse concept O’Brien proposed to the city of Jena. The identity-forming overall concept for revitalising the monument for the city of Jena combines interior and exterior, past, present and future with one another and adds value to an inner city area. The hologram facade, as an independent aluminium/steel/glass structure mounted outside the existing protected monument, is the spatial expression of this city storehouse concept. The unique "eye" of the building emphasises the historically significant building inside with translucent to transparent effects, protecting the valuable core of the building. The hologram facade, approved as a work of art, is a 16 metre, accessible day and night light sculpture. The hologram facade forms a tailor-made connection between contemporary architecture and a historic building, and demonstrates a new method of living conservation of monuments. Here, hologram means a holistic message. The facade is a spatial expression of the character of the city of Jena, an homage to optics, light and glass, the spiritual and economic identity of the city of Jena. It can be viewed as a macro-window made up of micro-windows. This "lens" offers viewers kaleidoscopic perspectives from the inside out and vice versa, changing points and angles of view, depending on the time of day or the season. Planned to an architectural dramaturgy, the hologram facade is sustainable and energy conscious using natural solar effects. Different holographic and optical windows and dichroitic elements illuminated in the sunlight depending on the time of day and position of the viewer.
